A Word To Nigerian Youths

Great people aren't only those who inherited fortunes from families but those who pull through in the face of all odds.  According to The Free Dictionary Encyclopedia, ‘a self made person is the one who achieved success or recognition positively by one’s own efforts not to advantages given by birth, education, inheritance etc’. We cannot continue to wait on government and those we consider better than us and jeopardize our future. Shake off that devil and face the reality.

Our country Nigeria is fast becoming just too fearful because of the killings, maimings, kidnappings, bombings, robberies and other horrible things happening around the country.  When you Read through the pages of the newspapers on on-line and see all the horror pictures and videos of these events as they unfold each day, you will only but conclude that many of the people perpetuating these evil are naturally lazy and wicked, but they will only put the blame on the devil, unemployment or being marginalized.

While I will agree one hundred per-cent that there is an alarming rate of unemployment in the country, it is also worthy of note that who you are today is exactly what you have consciously or unconsciously planned to be.  This is because many of these individuals who try to make this country uninhabitable are those who purposely dropped out of school even when their parents and guardians were ready to train them.  Some are those who prefer cultism or prostitution to reading their books and consequently got expelled from school.  Others are those who refused to concentrate on learning a trade but want to “enjoy” more than their masters and were eventually thrown out.  They run from one master to another and at the end could not complete what they started.  The choices they made then are now impacting negatively on the whole country.

My worry is the disturbing rate at which these young men and women turn into kidnappers, terrorists, armed robbers and every evil group you can think of.  More worrisome is why they cannot think of other positive and better ways of making themselves better individuals even where there are no white collar jobs and government incentives available.

Let us consider the words of this great American - Frederick Douglass, a self-made man himself, said ‘the discussion of self-made men was the discussion of “manhood itself, and this is in its broadest and most comprehensive sense. The story of the self-made man is the story of manliness personified.  The self-made man harnesses and utilizes the most important masculine qualities: hard work, perseverance and most of all, personal responsibility.  The story of the self-made man embodies the goal of every man: to become the captain of his own destiny’.

Joining dangerous groups to avenge a wrong done by bombing the whole nation, maiming, killing and destroying properties and unleashing terror in your father’s land is not manliness enough; it is a way of running away from reality.  For you to show how manly, determined and ready to uplift your background and have a secured future, you must:

Look beyond Your Predicaments:

You might have had a bad beginning, bad upbringing and hurtful relationships in the past, I want you to look beyond that, decide in your mind to be a better human being who deserves better life.  Forget about your ugly past, aim high, mingle with good people and do not allow your past bad experiences to override your sense of good judgment.

Think Positively:

Your way of thinking shapes your entire being.  When you channel your mind to positive things, you will definitely think in the positive direction but if you engage your mind on how to carry out revenge, you will end up hurting your self and others. Instead of thinking on how to break into that bank and steal their money, think of how to convert that empty piece of land close to your house into a farm land and use it to request for loan from that bank.  Instead of thinking how to kidnap that Senator’s mother, think about how to mobilize the young people in your area to get the Senator’s attention to donate trophies or cash for a competition.  That money you used to acquire those weapons of destruction can be used to start a small business that can transport you to the next “Dangote”.  Use your brain to think positively.

Do Not Live Above Your Means:

Do not allow anything you cannot afford at the moment make you loose a sleep.  Dressing well, building and living in exquisite houses, driving posh cars can be enticing and good but getting them in dubious ways can also destroy your future and that of your entire family.  Stop comparing yourself with that other person because you were not created at the same time.  Anyone that you are not sure of how he made his or her money, do not try to know how the money came about. Try as much as possible to be yourself and live within your income.  Wait upon God and He will lift you up.

My dear people, enough of these blood baths which will eventually defile our land.  This is because it is difficult to come out from the consequences of a defiled land.

Do not defile this country.

Reconsider your stands.
