Lifestyles That Can Make You Fat

Do you know you can maintain a healthy weight throughout your life time?  Do you also know you can accomplish this without visiting a single Doctor?  Avoiding the following will help tremendously:

Sitting Too Long

Are you an office worker or a Writer who sits for too long in front of the computer? Are you addicted to movies and programs and sits for a very long time watching your television?  Are you the Boss or Madam of the house or the shop and surround yourself with errand boys and girls and then sits in a place dishing out instructions?

Healthy Beverage for 40+ Moms and Dads

I have this amazing revelation to give to you if you are 40 years and above concerning beverage drinks.  I say 40 because at this age I presume you are already a mum or a dad and would have the understanding of what health problem is. Okay!

Before you hit age 40, you hardly understand or believe that one could have health issues and probably do not mind what you eat.  For example, when you talk to the younger ones on the dangers of eating sweet things particularly sugary drinks, they wave you aside.

I have however discovered that health problems do set in from this period of one’s life time and what you eat determines how healthy you will be.  If you eat and drink healthy food and drinks, you will be healthy but if you decide to eat junks, unhealthy foods and wash them down with sugary and cholesterol filled drinks, you will become sick and eventually die early.

How to Recover Fast after a Stillbirth

Stillbirths do occur at different stages of pregnancy, some babies die in the stomach after about 28 weeks, while others may occur during labor and child birth. When it occurs earlier it will be regarded as a miscarriage.

Losing your baby no matter how old can be very overwhelming, mothers who have had miscarriages or lose their pregnancies can tell you better.

A good friend of mine has just lost her baby immediately after birth.  When I visited her home, she did not come out to see me, she was so devastated that she has refused to see anyone or hear any word of advice.

Most of us have had this type of experience in the past and to tell you the fact, it is definitely not a good experience, especially if you are a first timer.  I lost my first baby boy immediately after birth and it was like the end of the world then.  I remembered how I will cry for a whole day without eating until I was able to put myself together.

Kidney Failure Disease - How to Take Care of Yourself

The disease of Kidney failure is getting too scary by the day.  Few days ago we all received the news
of the demise of a young Nigerian Actor. His death is a typical example of millions of people that are dying daily as a result of this deadly kidney disease.  Since this disease is not a respecter of anybody, we owe ourselves the duty of taking care of our health to prevent or reduce its effect.

Here Are The Top 6 Preventive Measures We Can Take to Help Ourselves.

Don’t Keep Urine in Your Bladder.

Keeping urine in your bladder for too long or excreta in your bowl is a very bad idea. A full bladder can cause bladder damage. The urine that stays in the bladder multiplies bacteria quickly. Once the urine re-fluxes back to the urethra and kidneys, the toxic substances can result in kidney infections, then urinary tract infections, and then nephritis, and even uremia. When nature calls – do it as soon as possible.

Don’t Eat Too Much Salt (Sodium).

You should eat no more than 5.8 grams of salt daily.  Most of the foods we consume already have salt in them, so if you already have diabetes and or High Blood Pressure, do not add more salt to your food. Eating too much salt will raise your blood pressure which will affect your kidney.  Not eating salt at all is not the best, so do it in moderation to avoid the dangers of both ways.

Lemon and Its Many Uses

Lemon is in the class of Citrus and one of the most multipurpose fruits on earth.  It is found everywhere and very affordable. This common fruit can be useful in the following ways:

As Disinfectant:  Lemon juice is very acidic and can be used as a natural disinfectant.  Its scent is good for humans but very uncomfortable to pests.

Preservative:  Pour some quantities of Lemon juice on your food for preservation.  Use it to replace chemically based ingredients in preserving your food.  You can also use it to cleanse your meat or fish.

Kitchen & Home Cleaning:  Lemon juice can be used to clean your kitchen utensil.  It is perfect for eliminating odor and bacteria.  Cut a lemon in 2 halves.  Use each half to scrub your cutting buds and other wooden products.  Leave it on for at least 10 minutes and rinse with clean water.  The result will be amazing.

Apart from the household uses of this wonderful fruit, lemon is also used for health issues:

Elimination of Body Fats:
Drinking of lemon juice daily will help eliminate the fats in the body especially belly fats.  Cut 2 or 3 lemons into 2 halves and squeeze out the water into a glass and add a little water.  Drink it in the morning and night to achieve good results.  You can also use this method to reduce stomach and menstrual pains.

Cure for Pimples and Acne:
Rub lemon juice on the affected parts to clear the pimples and other blemishes especially on your face.

Is there anything this wonderful fruit cannot do?  If you know any other uses, please do share it with us in the comment box below.  It will be of great help to others.

How to Look Younger Than Your Age

No one wants to be referred to as old man or woman.  Everyone wants to look 10 years younger than his or her actual age.  Some will even go a step further to make declarations to reduce their age.  For you to achieve looking young, a few small lifestyle changes can set you in motion to actually achieve that youthful looks you feverishly wanted.

Avoid Skin Bleaching:  Many people especially women think that bleaching the skin will make them look younger.  Using harsh and dangerous chemicals will not only damage your skin, it will actually make you look much older than you should be.  As you age, use mild soap and moisturizing cream.  This will help keep your skin soft and young.

Eat More Natural Foods:  Twenty five percent of people admit that they do not eat natural foods; they depend heavily on processed ones.  This is a major mistake because when you miss these natural foods, you are actually missing out all the anti ageing nutrients that are contained in Natural foods.

Avoid Sugar Content Foods:  Sugar is a skin wrecker and the chief cause of all terminal diseases. Look for alternatives like honey, agave, brown rice syrup, fruit juice concentrate, evaporated can juice.  Some things that sound really innocent are actually sugar, and your body processes all sugar the same way.

Don’t Skip meals:  Apart from times when you perform the spiritual exercise of Fasting, make sure you have your breakfast even if you are not hungry in the morning.  It is just something to get your metabolism revved up.  Many people make the mistake of skipping breakfast because they think they are saving calories, but they just end up eating more calories later to compensate.

Snack Tactically:  If snacking is a must to you, snack on something that has fiber and protein because these are things that actually help curb your appetite.

Avoid Liquid Calories:  Your body does not record liquid calories, so it’s basically like you have not eaten.  For example, a glass of orange juice has about twice as many calories as an orange but no fiber, and that is the part that fills you up.

I hope these can help but if you know more ways, please add it in the comment box.You will be appreciated.

Some Foods to Avoid

If you are suffering from diabetes, type 1 or type 2, there are certain foods that should be avoided at all costs. It is only balanced diet in combination with exercise that can help you control this near fatal disease. One could still remain healthy by controlling food habits despite being diabetic.

Avoid or reduce the intake of these foods.

Foods to Avoid by Diabetics

Some foods are always "no-no" for diabetics. Fruit sugar, pastries, sugar, jam, molasses, cream, soft drinks and fried foods should be avoided at all costs. Similarly butter and hydrogenated vegetable oils needs to be avoided as well.

Foods to be drastically reduced

Not all foods need to be reduced drastically. But white sugar and white flour are two items that should be done away with if possible. Another food item to reduce drastically is fatty butter and the one to be totally avoided is soft drinks. Avoiding these will not only control blood sugar but also blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol and thereby reduces risks that occur due to diabetes. Sugar does not mean white sugar alone but honey, jaggery, jam, jelly, juice, chocolates, pie, syrup, artificial sweeteners, cream, cookies, and cake as well.
As I go out every morning, I see a lot of women queuing at the Fast Food Joints to get foods for their kids.  I use to wonder why they buy these processed foods everyday and I am becoming worried for these children because of the health hazards these children may eventually face because of these foods.  In my quest to find a way of discouraging people from feeding their children with these foods.  I was able to find this picture from the Punch Newspaper this morning and I decided to share it with my readers.

I hope it helps.

Another Cause of Cancer Revealed

I saw this informative piece and wants to share it with my readers.  As the saying goes, Health is wealth but may we never use our money to buy things that could harm and kill us. Do you know that the combination of anti-perspirant/deodorant can cause breast cancer? Most products on the market are a combination of anti-perspirant/deodorants. Before you purchase anything you would apply in your arm pits look at the labels! If it is written 'Deodorant' it is okay, but 'ANTI-PERSPIRANT', NO.

The concentration of toxins causes cell mutation starting from your armpit which will eventually lead to cancer. If you are a woman using antiperspirants and you are reading this now, check yourself, you probably have lumps in your breasts! Here's why: Your body removes toxins from the following 4 areas:

 1.   Behind your knees

2.      Behind your ears

3.      Your genital area

 4.   Armpits.

Those toxins are eliminated through sweating.  The anti-perspirant, as the name says, will block your skin pores and prevent you from sweating in that area. Those toxins get trapped under your skin and cause cell mutation - cancer. This is why most breast cancers occur in the upper outside quadrant of the breast area. Men are also at risk if they keep using anti perspirants instead of soap and water.

But men are of lesser risk because they do not mostly shave before applying the anti perspirants. Women, who apply antiperspirant after shaving the underarms, increase the risk due to tiny injuries and skin irritations which make harmful chemical components to penetrate more quickly into the body. Please take note of this. Spread the information to save lives. Read more on cancer

Tips to Lose Arm Fat

Arm fat is a major challenge to many women, although it occurs in both men and women; it is more common and has the most worrisome effect on the women. (In Nigeria, especially in the Eastern part of the country, it is mockingly referred to as “Christian Mother Hand”).  Flabby arms do not look attractive and can work against your image and self-confidence, trimmed and toned arm makes a woman look attractive and young.

Arm fat is a fat that is stored in the arm and like any other body fat is eliminated by burning them out.  The first step to control arm fat is to keep your whole body trimmed.  These can be achieved by:

Adoption of Healthy Diets-

The body may need all the classes of food to remain healthy but excessive consumption of carbohydrates and fats can lead to diabetes, cancer, obesity and other dangerous diseases.  If possible, avoid processed foods and sugary drinks.

Eat diets that are rich in protein as it helps to build and repair the body e.g.  Beans, eggs (particularly the white part) fish, white meats (chicken, turkey) etc. Eat less carbohydrate (unripe plantain), less fats, lots of fruits and vegetables.  Drink lots of liquids – water, natural fruit juice, protein shakes.

Most importantly consume your meals in small quantities to avoid over eating.

How to Handle Serious Burns

How to Handle Serious Burns

For two weeks, I was in a hospital caring for my 12 years old son who was seriously burned by hot water.  I had a very harrowing time watching my son scream with two eyes open when a pot of boiling water fell on him and left part of his back, hand and leg peeled off immediately. The sight of his body was pathetic. There were lots of suggestions from neighbors on how to handle it, some suggested we should apply eggs, pap, salt etc but I was not convinced because of the degree of the burn, I was only interested in running cold water from the tap on the wound and thinking of how to move him to the hospital.

As a result of this step taken, This is the 4th week the incident occurred and the wound is completely healed, his skin smooth, no deformity and no scars at all.  I see so many people with permanent scars and deformed bodies because of the burns they had which might not be as serious as my son’s and the reason being that it was badly handled at home before going to the hospital.

Burns are of three types: 1st Degree or minor burns, 2nd Degree and 3rd Degree. While you can successfully manage or treat 1st degree burns at home, there is certainly nothing much a person who is not a qualified medical practitioner can do for a patient with 2nd and especially 3rd degree burns rather than a little first aid which I have enumerated below and immediately helping the patience to the hospital.  This is to avoid infection, much scarring and deformity of the body.

The fact that we do not pray for unfortunate incidents like this to happen, does not mean it can not happen.  Hence the reason why I decided to share my experience with my readers on how to handle serious burns to achieve the best result.

These are what you should do:

Console the Patience:  Burns happens instantaneously and as a result can cause shock and or seizure to the victim.  Your duty at this point in time is to comfort him, reassure him that he will be alright while you look for means of getting him to the hospital.  This will also stabilize the victim and prevent fainting.

Help to Prevent Infection:  The skin serves as protection to the body, when it peels off, the body is highly open to infections and diseases.  Try as much as possible to remove anything that may cause infection from the victim e.g. dirty clothes, jewelries, sand etc. Also avoid contact with the wound with bare hands, if there is any need to touch the wound, use sterilized hand gloves.

While making arrangement to move the victim to the hospital, try and run some cold water from the tap on the wound, this will help to keep the body temperature cool (do not use ice block or ice water as this can cause more damage to the skin) then rap the wound with a clean cloth preferably white cotton material.  You can also give some analgesics like ‘paracetamol’ to reduce pain and body temperature.

Burns of this magnitude exposes the victim to other serious infections and diseases like: tetanus, fever, seizure which may lead to death if not given the right treatment.  More especially it can leave the victim with permanent disability if badly handled.  It is only wise the victim be managed by a qualified medical practitioner so as to get the best result and avoid untimely death.

I hope this helps.

How to Prevent Armpit Odor in Children

When a child approaches puberty, a lot of changes do occur in the body which includes:  growing of hair around the armpit and increase in the activities of secretion glands which bring about sweat.  Sweat itself does not have any odor but bacteria break them down into aromatic fatty acids and this process produces the strong odor.

When you notice these hormonal changes in your child, it is time to take extra care because body odor can turn out to be a burden on that child.  Even though sweating is a natural process by which the body eliminates waste products, its effect can be a pain in the neck if not handled well.

When I go out in the morning on public transport, I meet a lot of children with this strong body odor.  Sometimes, I will be forced to ask them if they took their bath and the answer will always be in the affirmative.  The funniest part of this scenario is that, these children in question are not aware they have such problem, which is why the parents or guardians have to come in to help them out.

This knowledge led me into carrying out a research why children at this very young age experience body odor despite being cleaned everyday and I was able to the realize that body odor in children is beyond water and soap bath.

What to Do:

Be Involved:  Do not say at that age, he should be able to clean himself up or I need to go to work early.
Wake the child up early so as to supervise the bathing.  Children generally do not like taking bath and if you did not show interest, they may end up not bathing at all or pouring only water on the body. Make sure that while taking their bath, they scrub with soap and sponge especially the armpit, the toes and the private parts, use antibacterial soaps and antiseptics.  Few drops of Dettol into the water is good enough.  Antiseptic prevent bacteria that break down sweat into fatty acids which produces this unpleasant odor.   They should also take a bath after school, play or after any form of exercise.

How to Lose Belly Fat for Moms Over 40

The Problem of struggling to keep to shape after childbearing has been a major challenge for older moms.  Some of them after trying several methods have given up; accepting it as their faith and this has affected them both physically and emotionally. I am here to let you know that you can remove these fats with a little adjustment in your life style.

After the birth of my last child eight years ago, my tummy refused to go back to shape and this has been my major challenge ever since then because my type of job requires me to look good.  I have read and tried several methods to control this extra body until recently when I discovered that most of belly fats actually depend on the style of life you live.  Most moms in their 40s are always reluctant to take care of themselves.  They only concentrate on meeting with the requirements of making a family and before you know it, you are out of shape.  In this post, I will tell you the steps you can take to reduce your belly fat.

Strengthen The Belly:  The abdominal walls may have been weakened due to several pregnancies carried with it.  Make out a time each day especially early in the morning to work on your stomach to strengthen the abdominal walls.  There are several ways of doing this but I am going to concentrate on Moms who do not have all the time.  You can work on your belly right inside your bedroom, just take out 20 to 30 minutes and concentrate on the exercises that really target your abdominal area.

Try These Tips:

Tip 1

With your back on the floor, place your hands by your sides; raise your head to touch your toes.  You may not achieve this immediately you start but gradually you will.  Do this up to the count of 20; you can increase the count as you get stronger.

Tip 2

Still with your back lying flat on the ground, raise your two legs; try pushing them down to touch the ground above your head.  If you cannot do it at this time, get your child or someone to help.  Within some days you will be able to do it on your own.

Tip 3

Stand on your feet, raise your two hands up and leap like a frog.  Try to leap round your room and count up to 20.

There are thousands of styles you can do.  Try to learn more belly toning styles but the bottom line is that you must do exercises that will toughen your belly regularly.

Be Cautious of What You Put In Your Mouth:  The time of eating what is available is over.  Believe it or not, the cause of belly fat is mostly as a result of the kind of food you eat.  Sugary and fatty foods are the major cause of belly fat, and this calls for a major adjustment on your food consumption.

Eat Healthy Foods:  Losing fat does not require skipping of meals.  In fact skipping your meal will make you eat more at the long run so take your 2 or 3 square meals.  What is important is the content of the meal you are taking.  Avoid junk food; concentrate on fruits, vegetables, whole grain, white meat like chicken and fishes. Always make sure you have a good and complete breakfast that will fill your stomach.  Complete in the sense that all food components (Carbohydrates, protein, minerals etc) are present in the meal and eat your meals in small quantities.   This will help to avoid food craving and eating in between meals.  Look for chewable fruits and vegetable instead of snacks to complement your foods.

Eat Your Food Timely:  Try your possible best to eat your food at the right time.  Your breakfast should be eating in the morning and not at 11am.  You must make sure you eliminate every food in your stomach before taking your breakfast.  Lunch at midday, and dinner at 6pm to 7pm.  If you are really serious to eliminate your belly fat, do not eat dinner anything after 7pm.  Experts have confirmed that any food taken after 7pm is a poison to the body and stomach in particular.

Drink Only Healthy Drinks:  Take a lot of water.  It carries essential nutrients to the cells; it removes waste products like toxin from the body through urine and faeces.  Water also helps in breaking down the food that we eat.  So instead of taking carbonated drinks that will add to your problems, take water.  When you feel hungry and it is not the right time to eat, always fill your stomach with water until you are ready to eat.

Discipline is the key.  Try all these and you will see the amazing results that will wao! You.

Types and Symptoms of Diabetes

Types and Symptoms of Diabetes

I ran into an article in one of the Nigeria’s foremost Newspapers on the debilitating effect of diabetes on the family.  The rate at which we loose our loved ones and bread winners to diabetes is alarming and fearful, so I decided to deviate a little bit to share this piece of information to my readers because I consider it very important.

Diabetes commonly referred by Doctors to as diabetes mellitus is a disease by which there is excess sugar in the blood of an individual. This can be as result of inadequate insulin production or because the body’s cells are not responding properly to insulin.

Lack of Appetite In Children - How To Make Sure They Are Eating Enough

Lack of Appetite In Children - How To Make Sure They Are Eating Enough

All over the world, mothers have always been faced with the problem of some of their kids not being able to eat well.  You will agree with me that it does not give joy to any mother seeing her child rejecting food while others are eating.  She will definitely look for ways of getting that child eat.

So many mothers in our part of the world especially those that are not literate have devised some crude and fearful ways of making sure that their child eats, some have gone to the extent of force feeding their babies i.e. they hold the baby down with their two legs, close the nostrils and pour the food into the mouth. When they blow the air into the mouth of the baby, the baby swallows the food forcefully gasping for air.  This crude method has killed so many children, turning the mother who has a good intention of making sure that her baby eats into a murderer.
