Types and Symptoms of Diabetes

I ran into an article in one of the Nigeria’s foremost Newspapers on the debilitating effect of diabetes on the family.  The rate at which we loose our loved ones and bread winners to diabetes is alarming and fearful, so I decided to deviate a little bit to share this piece of information to my readers because I consider it very important.

Diabetes commonly referred by Doctors to as diabetes mellitus is a disease by which there is excess sugar in the blood of an individual. This can be as result of inadequate insulin production or because the body’s cells are not responding properly to insulin.

According to the doctors, diabetes is of two three types; Type 1, Type2 and gestational diabetes.

In Type1, the body does not produce insulin and it can develop before age 40, but this type of diabetes is not common and when it develops, does not have a cure.

Type2 diabetes is the commonest around the world and almost 90% of all cases of diabetes are of this type.  In this case, the body does not produce enough insulin or the cells in the body resist insulin and to keep going, you will need to be injected with insulin from time to time.  A study conducted in 2011 by the Center for Nanomedicine found that eating of fatty foods leads to obesity which has the tendency of causing type2 diabetes.

Experts also said that early detection with lifestyle changes can reverse type2 diabetes.  It can also be cured with weight loss surgery.

The third type – gestational diabetes affects women during pregnancy when they have a very high level of glucose in their blood.  American Scientists from Howard University has found that women whose diets are high in Animal fats before being pregnant have the risk of having gestational diabetes.

After many years, diabetes can lead to other more serious complications like blindness, infection of the skin and the legs which can lead to amputation, damage to nerves which can cause problem of erection in men.

Doctors advise that fatty and starchy foods must be minimized to the barest minimum especially those approaching age 35.  Eat more of fruits and vegetables and keep your body exercised.  You must also avoid sugary drinks, heavy smoking and drinking of alcohol.  Eat healthy food and avoid junks so that you will leave long to eat the fruit of your labor.
